Open Source

is the foundation of modern software development, especially on the Internet.

Important components such as operating system (example: Linux kernel), system libraries (example: glibc, OpenSSL), web server (example: NGINX), programming language (example: PHP ), development tools (example: PHPUnit ), or frameworks (example: Symfony) are Open Source and Free Software. And in our opinion, they have to be.

In their Open Source Software Strategy , the European Commission writes: „In the datacentre, open source has grown to become the dominant force, including Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, and open source is used for the vast majority of Commission websites and many online services. [...] Our default software development environment is based on open-source tools.”

We love, contribute to, and are committed to Open Source. We helped launch the PHP Foundation and represented Open Source interests at the European Union. We support Open Source projects such as TYPO3 , Joomla , or PHPUnit at code sprints.

Sebastian Bergmann has been leading the development of PHPUnit for over 20 years. During this time, he has also not only developed other important libraries and tools and released them as Open Source, but has contributed to a large number of Open Source projects, not least PHP itself.

Arne Blankerts has created two important tools for PHP development, Phive and PHAB . These are available as Open Source, as is Templado , which he developed. In addition, he has contributed to the PHP documentation for a long time.

Stefan Priebsch mentored a Google Summer of Code student who refactored and enhanced the PHPT test runner. As an adjunct professor, he supervised a master's thesis at the Rosenheim University of Technology. dePHPend was developed and released as Open Source as part of this thesis.

What is Open Source? Why is the EU interested in it? This presentation gives answers.
